COMPETITIVE PROGRAMS

Here at SKG, we offer the option of two different competitive team tracks - the USAG Development (or "DP") Program, and the USAG Xcel Program.

The DP program is a more traditional, time-intensive program that requires a heightened level of commitment, while the Xcel program provides equal competition opportunities with less of a time commitment, ideal for children who may also want to pursue other sports or activities. There is no “easier” or “harder”, they are just two different competition paths that both aim to offer a rewarding competitive experience to gymnasts of all kinds.

Both programs are by tryout or invite only. Contact us for a tryout, or with any further questions.

USAG DP Program

Levels 2-10

Level 2- Our first competitive level, Level 2 gymnasts will work year-round on routines to prepare for winter competitions. Strength and flexibility training will increase, as well as the emphasis on clean skills and progressions over big skills. These gymnasts attend practice 1-2 times per week, with 2 times being recommended when possible.

Levels 3-5 - The remaining three compulsory levels, Levels 3 through 5 introduce gymnasts to a larger competitive environment, while continuing to learn and compete compulsory routines. At these levels, we start to require a slightly larger time commitment, and begin to build on the beginner skills learned in levels 1 and 2. The requirements and expectations increase as the level increases, and gymnasts are required to attain a certain all around score in order to “pass” to the next level. These gymnasts attend practice anywhere from 2-3 times per week.

Level 6+-From Level 6 onward, gymnasts are allowed to compete their own routines, constructed with a set of skill requirements that USAG puts out every four years. Routines are not only expected to contain these skill requirements, but also difficulty and artistry requirements. These levels also require a certain all-around score to pass to the next level. Levels 9 and 10 are considered “pre-elite” levels and are for the truly dedicated and motivated gymnast. These gymnasts attend practice 4-5 times per week.

USAG Xcel Program

Levels Bronze-Diamond

Bronze: The introductory level to our Xcel track, these gymnasts begin to explore combining beginner competitive skills into routines, as well as working progressions that will lead to more intermediate skills down the line. These gymnasts are only expected in the gym 1-2 days a week. This level also provides a good indicator to the gymnast, parents, and coaches of whether they will be successful moving forward in the Xcel program, or would better suit the DP program. We typically require all first-time competitors in the Xcel program to start at this level.

Silver: The next step up from Bronze, Silver-level gymnasts are expected to incorporate clean form and beginner/intermediate skills into their routines, leading to a more strict judging criteria in competition. These gymnasts are expected to attend more meets, and begin to dedicate slightly more time to practice, typically 2-3 days per week.

Gold: This is where skill requirements begin to rise considerably, especially on the uneven bars. Gold gymnasts will use intermediate skills to craft routines on all events, beginning to focus on artistry and presentation alongside their skills. Gold gymnasts are expected to attend practice 3-4 times per week.

Platinum: An entry into the advanced Xcel levels, Platinum gymnasts are expected to incorporate intermediate/advanced level skills into their routines, with the expectation that their execution (form) will match, if not exceed, that of lower levels. These gymnasts are expected to practice 4-5 times a week.

Diamond: The highest of the Xcel levels, Diamond gymnasts are given a wide berth as to the difficulty of skills they can include in their routines. This level has the widest range of competitive skill, so most gymnasts will  spend multiple years here. These gymnasts are expected to practice 4-5 times a week.
